Dior SS27 Show Features Wénwán Walnut Invitations

Jonathan Anderson sent polished wénwán walnuts in a grey Dior-branded box as invitations for the house's Spring/Summer 2027 runway show. The Dior SS27 show took place on September 29, 2026, at Paris’ Jardin des Tuileries during Paris Fashion Week.

The runway was octagonal, rendered in lily white, and split the middle of a pond. Trees sprouted from the water, and models walked beneath them. Plumes of smoky mist rose from beneath the runway and across the surface. The show was Dior's fashion shows for the coming season.

Collection and design elements

This was Jonathan Anderson's third women's ready-to-wear collection for Dior. The collection used wafer-thin fabrics like silk mousselines, organza, and Chantilly lace. Anderson posed a question in his show notes: 'How light can a garment be?'

Some pieces looked as if they were made of petals and could blow away in the wind. White smoking jackets with black piping were designed to resemble swans. Knee-length cropped flares took the shape of trumpet flowers. The overall theme leaned heavily on natural imagery.

The walnut invitation and its cultural significance

The invitation consisted of a pair of actual wénwán walnuts, a traditional Chinese collectable, placed in a cushioned grey presentation box. They are not miniature sculptures and are not meant to be eaten. Wénwán walnuts are prized for their texture and the glossy patina they develop through years of handling.

Finding two walnuts with matching shapes and sizes is particularly difficult. Dior described the theme as 'The asymmetry of nature.' The practice is associated with patience and appreciation for objects that become more beautiful with age. Jonathan Anderson said: "Coming across wénwán walnuts reminded me of how we can find knowledge and preciousness in nature."

The runway show lasts minutes, but the walnuts could keep owners occupied for years as they develop a patina. The invitation can continue developing throughout multiple Dior seasons. Nature is not interested in making identical copies. Even Dior cannot tailor a walnut to perfection.

Attendees and reception

Rihanna attended the show as a guest of honour. Other attendees included Rosalía, Jennifer Lawrence, Jisoo, Anya Taylor-Joy, Mia Goth, Eileen Gu, Hyunjin, and Cynthia Erivo. Cynthia Erivo made her Dior debut at this event.

Online reactions were mixed. One Instagram user commented simply, 'That's nuts.' Another questioned whether something was hidden inside the shells. A different user wondered if the matching pair hinted at Anderson's approach to combining Dior's menswear and womenswear lines. One commenter dismissed the invitation as boring, while another questioned whether Dior was appropriating a Chinese cultural tradition.

The collection also featured specific confirmed looks. Model Miranda wore a strappy dress with a V-neckline and gathered material at the waist. Gleaming gold and silver python trousers, which debuted at the Dior menswear show in June, were featured. One model wore a pair of green gardening shoes.
