Mondi has introduced a new laser-marked flexible packaging concept aimed at e-commerce. The solution recently won the German Packaging Award 2026 in the Sustainability category. It is designed to help brands combine greater packaging flexibility with improved recyclability.

This packaging pairs a corrugated outer box with recyclable flexible materials for e-commerce and bag-in-box uses. Instead of traditional printing, the concept uses laser marking to apply artwork directly onto the flexible packaging during the converting process.

Technology and Flexibility

The laser-marking approach removes the need for printing plates. This allows for faster updates to artwork, easier personalization, and shorter production lead times. These benefits can help brands react more swiftly to new product launches and shifts in what consumers want.

The technology works with several flexible formats. These include Mondi's own re/cycle StripPouch and re/cycle FlexiBag. It also supports design for recycling through simplified material structures.

Materials and Sustainability

Depending on the specific use, the packaging can include bio-based feedstocks or post-consumer recycled content. According to Mondi's internal Product Impact Assessment, a bio-based laser-marked StripPouch shows significant CO₂ reductions when compared to a conventional fossil-based printed and laminated stand-up pouch.

Jens Koesters, Manager of Technical Service, R&D and Innovation at Mondi Consumer Flexibles, commented on the market need. "Customers are under growing pressure to meet sustainability targets while managing increasingly complex product portfolios and changing consumer demands," he said. Koesters added that the concept supports circularity with bio-based materials and greater artwork flexibility in one solution, helping brands respond more quickly to market requirements while progressing towards their circularity goals.

Commercial Exploration
